Together with six Surrey Christian High School students, Jenny and Dennis dG spent 16 days during spring break connecting with leaders in Christian Schools and churches in the very beautiful country of Honduras. Their first days were spent with the community of the Escuela Reformada Cristiana Juan Calvin; a small school rooted in the reformed tradition in the city of Choluteca. This school is connected with the Christian Reformed Church in Honduras and the work of Christian Reformed World Missions. Unlike many private schools in Honduras, Juan Calvino welcomes children with special needs. This, in turn, makes it less appealing to a growing middle class who prefer to have their children in schools that do not accept these children and claim to have higher academic standards. The struggles of this little school were very evident and worthy of ongoing encouragement and support. Their trip also included a visit to a church and school situated in the shadow of the Tegucigalpa’s dump/landfill which is the home and workplace of some 1800 people. The school is a beacon of hope in this desolate reality. Other highlights included visiting a community that offered an agricultural high school and a morning spent at a maternity hospital. The Christian Reformed Church has had an active presence in Honduras for many years and it was good to see some of the fruit of its efforts in schools and churches.
