Dec. 19, 2012: the day the brand new Port Mann bridge was closed due to foot-long icicles dropping on unsuspecting cars below, was also the day of A Sufjan Christmas here at Willoughby Church. Fearless folk braved the early afternoon weather conditions to help with set-up and sound and to drop off homemade desserts and other goodies. And, despite all the afternoon worries, close to 200 people came to listen to the music of Sufjan Stevens and to enjoy scrumptious desserts.
A handful of musicians from Willoughby, partnered with a few musicians from nearby churches, to recreate two 45 minute sets of Sufjan Steven’s most popular Christmas tunes and arrangements. In addition, Mark spoke from the piano about what Jazz and Blues can teach us about the birth of Christ. Desserts and drinks were enjoyed, and with plenty of time to mingle and chat.
It was especially exciting to see many new faces; people from other church congregations, and also from the community. Thanks for inviting your friends and neighbours – maybe next year even more will come!
