Widgeon Creek canoes are being arranged and the weather is getting nicer! The campout will be from Friday evening until Sunday afternnoon, May 27-29. The campout is for grades 4 through 7 (Juniors are welcome with an attending parent). We will be canoeing up the slough (1.5 hours each way) to the wilderness campsite (pit toilets only). Lodging will be in tents.
Pinecone Burke Provincial Park lies south of Garibaldi Provincial Park, west of Pitt Lake and Pitt River and extends south to include Burke Mountain in Coquitlam. Widgeon Slough and Widgeon Valley are accessible by boat. We will launch our canoes from Grant Narrows at the south end of Pitt Lake, and paddle through Widgeon Slough. An old logging road will lead us up the lower valley where a trail branches off for Widgeon Creek Falls. We will be spending the afternoon canoeing in on Friday, the day hiking to the falls on Saturday, and returning by canoe on Sunday morning. High tides are predicted for Friday evening at 6pm and Sunday morning at 6am - we will be canoeing on a high tide on Friday evening and returning with the current on Sunday - perfect conditions! Sunset for the weekend is predicted at 8:30 pm, so if we get in our canoes by 5pm on Friday we should have plenty of time to make camp before dark.
*Bring a hearty bag snack for eating on the drive to the canoe launch site on Friday evening - we will be canoeing right through dinner time! Once we arrive and build a fire we will have smokies and s'mores.
